Vlog: Revisiting my former home
In this vlog, winter is finally coming to an end and the first signs of spring appear. Come and see stunning, crystal-clear views over the mountains and the sea, and Art Nouveau architecture in Vienna.
I also revisited a place I had lived in 20 years ago. It used to mean a lot to me, and it was deeply emotional to walk the fields again that I had walked pretty much daily back then. The Danube is close by as well, and as always it looked like liquid silver in the evening light.
Now I’m back in Croatia, but not for long! It was long enough though to put together this vlog, and I hope you’ll like it.

We do get these crystal clear views here in the winter. You can see it from my house here, and this is Kvarner Bay from Rijeka.
But it's also one of the wettest corners in Europe, and so we also get a lot of this.
The weather is horrible! I can't even see beyond the next few houses, and it's so dark, it hasn't brightened up all day. It's like it's evening. And so I step outside as often as the weather will allow, to get some daylight and see my furry friends around the village.
Hello, welcome to my vlog. It's spring! See how sunny it is? See the blossoms behind me? It's 16° today - okay, actually it's only about 12 up here on the mountain, but that's just pretend that doesn't exist. I'm just so happy to be outside again and to have warm temperatures, and okay, mild temperatures, but you get the drift: to not be freezing anymore when I step outside the house. So yeah, in that sense my vlog will be the end of winter and moving into spring and what I've been up to these last two months.
I'm actually only here at home in Croatia for a week. I've just been to to Vienna for two weeks, and next week I'll go to Bavaria again for another two weeks, which you'll see in the next vlog. But I've kind of decided that from then on, I'm going to stay in Croatia for a while until at least autumn. I don't want to go abroad all the time this year. There are some personal reasons for that. There are also health reasons because I continue working on my health. I mean, you know, if you've followed this for a while, that I have autoimmune issues, but I have been feeling a little better. And I can now disclose that for about a month and a half, almost two months, I've started working out again. I am now in a gym, and I'm actually working on my muscles, and this time it seems to be working. I haven't had a major autoimmune reaction yet that has put me flat on my back for another 3 weeks, as it happened every time I tried to start working out again in the last 5 years - four years, sorry, it's only been four. "Only", haha, it's bad enough, right?
But yeah, fingers crossed that this is going to, that is going to continue working, because it makes me so happy to be able to move again and to counteract the atrophy of my muscles, which has been causing problems with my joints, because my muscles weren't there anymore to support my knees and my hips and all that and my back. And now I'm beginning to counteract that. It's a very long and slow journey, I can't do much, only twice a week and only for an hour and really very little exercise, compared to whatever I used to do years ago. But it's a beginning and it feels fantastic. I'll keep you updated on this. And now I'll stop talking and show you what the last two months have been like, and I hope you'll enjoy it.
My birthday is in mid-February, and the weather was absolutely atrocious this year.
I'm not letting that stop me!
You're going to go slowly down, to an angle that's okay with you for your lower back, and then do the hyperextension like this, come back, hold for one or two seconds, then again go down. Nice and slow, up, hold that position, contract, one, two.
Still shit weather!
Going into March, the sunny days became more frequent. One day, I had an errand in Opatija and went for a walk afterwards. And it's days like these that really bring it home to me, how beautiful the place is where I live.
For Cassandra's birthday, we went to the National Theater to see the Ukrainian Ballet.
And then I went to Vienna for 2 weeks. This was filmed through the windows of the subway train.
I was catsitting this complete cutie called Gary, working a lot, and also went to see all my favorite places in Vienna.
What follows here is a few more random impressions from around Vienna.
And this is my favorite cafe where 5 years ago, I celebrated my 50th birthday with friends from all over Europe.
I met up with my friends Cornelia and David and their little son for a walk and to visit the Otto Wagner church in the Art Nouveau style.
On my last day, I took a very special trip to a little town on the outskirts of Vienna.
I'm retreading my steps from 20 years ago, when I used to live here. It feels unreal. I remember this place so well, yet I don't remember it, I remember it differently. Of course, some things have changed, some new houses, 20 years is long time, trees are bigger. And yet it is still "my" fields.
And then it was time to say goodbye to my sweet cuddly little Gary and go back home.
