Your past self calls and says...

Hello, welcome to this week's Wild Spirits News. I'm Sibylle, and I help women between 40 and 60 to do lots of what they love and to find their unique life purpose. If that sounds interesting, check out my website, wildspiritscoaching.com.

Today's subject is, as I just said: 'Your past self calls'. You might say now: "Wait, isn't it usually the future self that calls and gives you advice or...", you know, and that's true, but I have a point, so bear with me, hear me out. I'm all for making plans for the future, setting goals. It's the perfect time of the year for that, setting goals now for the new year, right?

But to do that, you have to become very aware of something that we all actually know. It's a bit commonplace, and that is that our choices determine our life. Our choices make us who we are. D'oh, of course, we know this. But knowing something and understanding it on a visceral level are two completely different things, which is why I have prepared a little exercise for you.

The exercise

So I'd like you to get comfortable now. If you have to, pause the video and make sure you're uninterrupted, or maybe light a candle or something, right, take a deep breath or two, and now I would like you to cast your mind back to 20 years ago, around 2024, December. Look, it doesn't have to be, it can be a year before, a year later, it's fine - around that time, 20 years ago. Don't stress and try to remember as much as you can about that time.

Where were you working? Or were you maybe studying at the time? Were you in a relationship? Who with, who were your friends, who did you hang out with? What did you do in your free time, what were your passions? Try to remember what was going on. Was there, was there something that made you particularly happy? Or was there trouble, some obstacles, problems...

And while you do this, I would like you to pay attention mostly to your emotions, to what you felt at that time. So, were you happy? Were you maybe just in love and on top of the world? Maybe you were just ticking along, or maybe you had problems, relationship problems, trouble at the job, or were unsatisfied, or you were very happy because you just landed your dream job, you know? What about your friends? What did, how did they make you feel? Your passions, what was your predominant emotion? What were you struggling with, what were you happy about?

And now here's a big caveat as you do this: I want you to not judge. Don't say: "Oh, I made such bad choices," or even, don't even say: "Oh yeah, I made the exact right choices!" Don't judge at all, just observe, be a scientist to look at your own life.

And now that you've recalled all this - it might take more time than this video, so you can always pause the video and continue when you're done with it - but once you've recalled as much as you can and tuned into the emotions that you felt, become aware how the choices and the things that you went through and the choices you made at the time - people, job, passions, where you lived, the way you lived - how these choices have affected your life ever since and have turned you, eventually, into the person that you are today. Just really make that connection over the last 20 years. And again, this might take some time. Pause the video and and do this, maybe write it down if you want to.

Once you're done with that, take another deep breath and become really aware of how you are the product of your past choices. And obviously, you're also the product of things that just happened around you, that is clear, but we want to concentrate on the things that you can influence, because from this you're going to draw conclusions as to which choices you should make now, today, this year, in 2024, and what you should set for goals in 2025 that will make your future self happier, more rested, more joyful and all these good things.

And that's it! That was my last video for this year, and that's why I broke the usual format of Background and Task, because I just wanted to give you a bit of inspiration. It's the time of the year when we think about these things, and I would like to invite you to do this exercise that I just described and then to set wonderful goals for 25 - not just, you know, goals that you think you should do: I'll lose weight, I'll be good - set goals that excite you, goals that have to do with your passions, with the people you love, with yourself, your own well-being, your- again, your passions, your joy is probably your best bet.
